Froglife is a small but highly effective wildlife charity that’s committed to the conservation of amphibians and reptiles – frogs, toads, newts, snakes and lizards. And through practical work to improve their habitats, we also support the lives of many other mammals, animals, birds and insects. Whilst we undertake research and contribute globally to amphibian scientific data, much of Froglife’s work is centred around community. We engage and educate diverse communities from schools and womens groups to allotment holders, those in prison to those with learning difficulties, people living with dementia, or those who have issues with mental health and we also run habitat and survey training courses for individuals and organisations across the UK.
You may have heard of our Toads on Roads project or seen the distinct ‘toad crossing’ warning signs at important crossing areas? Running for over 20 years, every spring, ‘toad patrollers’ up and down the UK prevent thousands of migrating toads and other amphibians from being killed or injured by putting them in buckets and transporting them safely to the other side of the road.
Froglife is also currently running a Wildlife Tunnel Campaign attracting signatories which we will use in conjunction with the results of our monitoring and research on a number of existing wildlife tunnels to show their benefits to amphibians, especially in areas of new build and construction. We will share this with National and local Government, all Local Authority Transport departments and ecological consultants and developers.
