Dr. Jane Goodall
1934 - 2025
On October 1st 2025, the world lost one of its greatest lights. Dr. Jane Goodall, trailblazing primatologist, environmentalist, and tireless advocate for the planet, passed away yesterday at the age of 91. Though she is no longer with us, the impact of her life and work will echo through generations.
From her earliest childhood in England, Jane was captivated by animals and nature. That childhood wonder blossomed into a lifelong mission — a mission that began in the forests of Gombe, Tanzania, where as a young woman with no formal scientific training, she transformed our understanding of the natural world. Her groundbreaking research revealed the rich emotional lives, intelligence, and complex social behaviours of chimpanzees, forever changing the way science views our closest relatives — and ourselves.
But Jane was far more than a scientist. She was a bridge between humanity and the rest of the living world. She showed us that empathy and observation are as vital to science as data and theory. Through her gentle patience and deep respect for all living beings, she reminded us that we are part of nature, not apart from it.
As the years went on, Jane’s mission grew beyond the forests. She became one of the world’s most powerful voices for conservation, animal welfare, and climate action. Through the Jane Goodall Institute and her Roots & Shoots programme, she empowered millions of young people around the globe to believe that their actions — no matter how small — can make a difference. Her message was always one of hope, even in the face of immense challenges: hope that humanity can learn, change, and choose a better path.
Jane travelled tirelessly well into her later years, speaking not just to scientists and policymakers but to children, communities, and ordinary people, inspiring each of us to protect the natural world with courage and compassion. She believed deeply in the human spirit and in our capacity for good, often saying, “Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference.”
Her passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, yet her legacy lives on — in the forests she helped protect, in the animals whose lives she illuminated, in the countless people she inspired, and in the global movement she sparked for a more compassionate and sustainable future.
Dr. Jane Goodall’s life was a testament to curiosity, humility, resilience, and love — for nature, for humanity, and for the fragile planet we share. As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate an extraordinary life that changed the world. May we honour her memory not only with words, but with action — by carrying forward her mission to protect the Earth and all who call it home.
Rest peacefully, Jane. The world is brighter for the light you shared with us. 🌿🕊️
