Remembering Dolly Parton: A Legacy of Kindness, Generosity and Giving Back
Everyone at Evergreen Insurance Services was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dolly Parton, an extraordinary entertainer whose warmth, generosity and compassion reached far beyond the world of music.
For more than six decades, Dolly brought joy to millions through her music, unmistakable personality and infectious sense of humour. Behind her remarkable career was something equally special: an incredible determination to use her success to help others.
Giving back was at the heart of Dolly’s life.
In 1988, she established The Dollywood Foundation, initially helping young people in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee, achieve greater opportunities through education.
Then, in 1995, she created what would become one of her greatest legacies: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
Inspired by her father, who was unable to read or write, Dolly wanted children to grow up surrounded by books and with the opportunity to develop a lifelong love of reading. What began by providing free books to children in her local community grew into an extraordinary international programme, sending millions of books to young children around the world — including here in the UK.
Her generosity extended far beyond education.
Dolly supported families devastated by wildfires in Tennessee, contributed millions towards disaster relief, supported children’s hospitals and healthcare, and famously donated $1 million towards medical research at Vanderbilt University, which helped support the development of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.
Yet perhaps what made Dolly’s philanthropy so remarkable was its sincerity. She never seemed interested in recognition for giving. She simply believed that if you were fortunate enough to be successful, you should try to help someone else along the way.
That is a philosophy that resonates enormously with all of us at Evergreen.
Our own journey has been built around the belief that businesses can make a positive difference by giving something back and supporting organisations doing incredible work. Dolly demonstrated just how powerful that idea can become when generosity, compassion and action come together.
The world has lost an extraordinary entertainer, but it has also lost an extraordinary humanitarian.
Her songs will continue to be played. Her films will continue to make people smile. But perhaps her greatest legacy will be found in the millions of children who discovered the joy of reading because a book arrived through their letterbox — and the countless people whose lives were made a little better because Dolly Parton decided to give something back.
Thank you, Dolly, for the music, the laughter and, above all, for showing the world just how much difference a little kindness can make.
